HOAP Conflict Resolution
If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

A WORKSHOP FOR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY TEACHERS
Whether it takes place in the schoolyard, in the hallway, in the classroom, or any other location where kids are with kids, conflict/bullying can and does occur … often. In response to these numerous incidents, there is often a focus on external consequences for the sake of expediency, or to create a sense that the “problem” has been dealt with (detentions, suspensions, etc.). Most us in the field know that this approach often fans the flames of anger, revenge or deviance in the aggressor, rather than create any lasting change. It also creates fear in the victim, who will often choose not to report incidents, to avoid further abuse. This is a destructive cycle that can be broken.
It is with great respect for teachers and students that I have developed the HOAP Approach to
Conflict Resolution. This workshop offers support and tools to teachers, so that we may address issues with our students in a way that helps all parties grow, in an environment of respect and dignity for all.
Participants will:
- discuss conflict/bullying issues in their own schools
- reflect upon their school’s response to conflict/bullying issues
- examine the effects of internal psychology vs. external psychology
- participate in active conflict resolution
- develop effective conflict resolution skills
- learn to use the HOAP Approach
It is not our job to control kids’ behaviours; it is our job to help them learn to control their own behaviours.
